Boost your Immune System

My recent bout with bronchitis and a sinus infection had me wondering about immune support… are there things I could be doing to better boost my immune system? I drink my shakeology every day, which definitely helps, but what else could i be doing to help? so I took to the internet to research the best ways to help keep your immune system healthy and learned that when you’re working out your immune system basically shuts down! So if you work out when you’re really sick (like i was) you can take even longer to get better because your immune system can’t focus on helping get you healthy. crazy, right?! here are some other tips i learned to help boost your immune system and keep you healthy all year long!

  • Get enough sleep! I am pretty darn good at sleeping if i do say so myself. i love sleep. and i don’t mind going to bed early. i started that habit years ago and it’s worked out well for me living on the west coast but working on central time. so i try to start winding down for bed between 9:30 and 10:30. The idea is to be asleep between 10 and 11 so i get 7-8 hours of sleep. I’ve found that this is my sweet spot. yours might be different and might change over time. when i was younger my sweet spot was 6 hours. and maybe as i get older it’ll go back to 6 hours. who knows? but make sure you’re doing what’s right for YOU. And if you’ve been doing a bunch of all nighters and then get sick i’m sure you’re not wondering why that happened
  • Perform at home neuropathy. When I was online, I stumbled upon www.neuropathycure.org/exercises-for-neuropathy-in-hands/ and found that I could perform at home wellness exercise for my feet to prevent sciatic pain, which you should definitely also have a look into.
  • Move your body. I know… didn’t I just say your immune system shuts down when you’re working out? well sure. but that’s only an issue once you’re sick. If you exercise regularly whether it’s taking long walks every day or going for a job you’re helping your body stay healthier. Getting tooooo crazy (tough mudder, running a marathon) might stress out your immune system but training for these things where you’re not getting too crazy can boost your immunity.
  • Clean up your eating! this might seem obvious but when you’re not feeling well you tend to crave the things that comfort you- comfort food!! there are so many healthy comfort foods out there though, and that’s what your body needs to have the tools to heal itself. Keep getting in your greens, get lots of vitamins from colorful fruits and veggies, and seriously try to restrict things like dairy, oil, and sugar- things that your body will fight with and you don’t need to give your body anything else to worry about!
  • Cut down on stress. Easier said than done but if you’re stressed about the work you’re missing the whole time you’re sick you’re going to make it harder for your body to get better! I know it’s hard- it’s hard for me too! but it’s important and your goal needs to be getting well. Do some meditation to help get yourself focused (I love the headspace & 10% happier apps to get you started!), practice some yoga, take a long hot bath- whatever helps you feel more relaxed!

I’m definitely not a doctor or healthcare professional so these tips, of course, are just what i’ve learned over the years of getting sick and researching health. What are your tips on getting yourself back to healthy??
