I love juice cleanses. Yes… I know… there is no proof that they have any legit health benefits. And your body will naturally detox if you give it the right tools. But I still love them. They make me feel better- maybe it’s all mental but whatever- if it works it works, right? And they make me eat healthier, at least for a minute after. And they make me feel proud when I successfully complete them because it really is a feat of willpower to just drink juice all the time. I even love when my tongue starts getting all gross because of all the detoxing. I don’t love when my teeth start having a weird film on them from all the sugar, but i think that mostly just happened with the master cleanse.
Today I’m starting a juice cleanse with a company i’ve never used before (since I’m in San Diego now I had to find a new one- Peeled is my favorite in Chicago). I picked based on who had a Groupon available. I know… very scientific. In any case, it was less than $100 for a 3 day juice cleanse, which I feel is cheaper than 3 days of produce would cost me if I were to juice it myself, so I always feel OK spending right around $100 for a 3 day. If you’re wondering if you could do a smoothie cleanse and have the same results, the answer is NO. Smoothies are AWESOME- i make them all the time but the contain the fiber from the foods you’re blending (smoothies are just blended- juices extract, well, juice from the food). Yes- fiber is good. Awesome even! Smoothies are great for you! But during a juice cleanse you want to let your body use all of its energy to detox itself. By just drinking juices you’re freeing up the energy your body normally spends during digestion on healing other things. That’s why a lot of people report having higher energy when doing cleanses- your body is full of energy when it doesn’t have to work on digestion all the time!
I do like that each juice is labeled with its ingredients and what time of day I’m supposed to drink that juice. It’s a little different than other juice cleanses I’ve done in that most of them have had some sort of lemon water as the first juice of the day and some sort of nut milk as the last and this one doesn’t. But I kind of like waking up to a delicious spinach juice… and with that, on to the juice reviews!
7AM Juice: Spinach, Blueberry, Blackberry, Raspberry, Banana, Hemp Protein, Lemon
Like I said, I’m used to the first juice being a lemon water so I took the first tentative sip of this juice expecting something tart. It was anything but! The flavors blend together great and the berry sticks out the most so it tastes kind of like a berry candy. It’s delicious! Definitely something to look forward to every morning! Also I worry sometimes that there will be a chalky or gritty flavor when protein powder is involved but there isn’t any of that going on here. Just pure juicey love. There IS a little bit of pulp, which is good because you’re supposed to “chew” your juices, and having the pulp in there helps for sure! If this is what they’re giving me out the gate I’m really looking forward to juice #2!
10AM & 3PM Juice: Kale, Arugula, Dandelion, Celery, Cucumber, Parsley, Cilantro, Ginger, Lemon, Apple, Habanero
This juice is delish! I liked the morning juice better but the kick of habanero is awesome! I hate celery but with all those other flavors in there I don’t even taste it. When I’m juicing myself I always replace celery with cucumber and get really sweet juices! I can’t tell what the dominant flavor in this juice is- I want to say cilantro but they all blend together really well so it’s hard to tell.
12PM Juice: Carrot, Celery, Pineapple, Ginger, Lemon
I was scared to try this one since it has celery and not too much other stuff (celery is GROSS) but it was pretty delicious! The taste it left me with was all pineapple so that’s pretty awesome. However while I was drinking it I started getting a scratchy sore throat so i had some tea, which helped a little bit. Then I started feeling kind of sleepy and achy, like I was coming down with a cold. No fun! I had a relaxing night, did a netti pot, and went to bed early. I woke up day 2 with the worst sore throat in the world- the kind that wakes you up at 5AM because swallowing is pure torture. I have definitely had this kind of awful sore throat before before getting a cold. Hopefully all the juice will help the cold go away before it really has a chance to sink in! Throat definitely got better throughout the day. Day 2 after drinking this juice my sore throat completely went away, so who knows what happened. I did dilute the juice in some water just in case it was just too hard on my throat or something.
5PM “Juice”: Avocado, Almond, Flax, Sea Salt, Date, Cinnamon
7PM Juice: Kale, Celery, Cucumber, Apple, Lemon
I was scared to drink this juice the first day of the cleanse. After my delicious 5PM milkshake I figured I was just going to be let down by whatever came after it. Plus I wasn’t even that hungry and not really in the mood for a green juice. I had started coming down with a cold and thought the juice would hurt my throat. Oh boy was I surprised. I wanted to savor this one! Even with the celery it was amazing!! Really refreshing and smooth tasting. Perfect way to end the nights!
So i loved this juice cleanse. Definitely one of the best I’ve done and I have a good feeling i’ll be doing this one again. My favorite was of course the 5pm juice that was like a milkshake. the 7am was probably my second favorite and such a good way to start the days. then probably the 7pm juice. the mid-day juices were also so good i feel bad putting anything at the bottom of this list!
How do i feel after the cleanse? Lighter (down 5#s). Healthier (even though I have a cold now). Ready to continue the healthy fuel for my body. Mentally tougher (I went to the grocery store during the cleanse and survived).
If you’re in southern cali definitely check them out!
